What is a Hollow End Rivet?
A hollow end rivet (also called hollow rivet or semi-tubular rivet) is a type of mechanical fastener similar to a solid rivet, but with a hole (hollow portion) in the tail end.
- When set, the hollow end flares out or rolls over to clamp materials together.
- Because less force is needed to deform the hollow section, hollow rivets are easier to install than solid rivets.
- They are widely used in leather goods, bags, shoes, belts, straps, tags, stationery, and light metal fittings.
Key Characteristics
- Hollow Shank: The primary feature is a cylindrical hole through the shank, making the rivet lighter and easier to install than a solid rivet.
- Deformable Tail: The hollow end of the shank is deformed using a tool or press, creating a second "head" to hold the materials in place.
- Material: They are made from various metals, including aluminum, steel, brass, copper, and stainless steel.
- Versatile Use: Hollow rivets are suitable for joining soft or thin materials, such as leather, plastic, and sheet metal, as well as for creating pivot points in assemblies.
Types of Hollow End Rivets
Hollow end rivets include flat, countersunk, round, and oval heads, with special types like broad head or self-piercing for thin or composite materials. Chosen based on strength, appearance, and material thickness.
-
By Head Style
- Round Head Hollow Rivet – most common, decorative as well as functional.
- Flat Head Hollow Rivet – low-profile finish.
- Countersunk Head Hollow Rivet – sits flush with the surface.
- Cap/Hat Type Hollow Rivet – has a domed cap for a smooth finished look.
-
By Application / Structure
- Single-cap Hollow Rivet – one side has a finished cap, the other side is the hollow flared end.
- Double-cap Hollow Rivet – both ends have smooth caps, mainly for fashion items like leather belts, bags, and garments.
- Semi-Tubular Rivet – partially hollow, requires less setting force, common in light engineering.
- Full Hollow Decorative Rivet – mainly used in leathercraft and stationery, more for appearance.
Sizes of Hollow End Rivets
Available in diameters 2 mm–10 mm and various lengths to match material thickness, ensuring a secure and reliable fastening.
