What is a single cap rivet

A single cap rivet is a type of rivet used primarily in applications where only one side of the rivet is visible, such as on belts, trunks, flap closure leather bags, collars, and harnesses. It consists of a cap on the visible side and an open or hollow post on the reverse side, which is not covered by a second cap. This makes the back side less attractive, so single cap rivets are ideal for places where the backside will not be seen. The rivet is designed to fasten materials securely by spreading the post end after insertion, with a notch near the tip (called a bite) that helps speed up the riveting process and increase joint strength.

Single cap rivets come in various sizes, typically described by the diameter of the cap and the length of the post stem. The length of the rivet should be chosen based on the thickness of the material being joined, generally about 2–3 mm longer than the total thickness to ensure proper spreading and secure fastening. They are often made of steel with finishes such as nickel plating and can be set using hand tools or hand presses with appropriate dies and setters.

In contrast to double cap rivets, which have matching caps on both sides for a neat appearance front and back, single cap rivets have a visible cap on one side and an open post on the other. They are commonly used in leathercraft and similar applications where the back side is hidden or not visible.

To install a single cap rivet, a hole is punched in the material, the rivet post is inserted through, and then the cap is pressed or hammered onto the post until it clicks into place. The post end is then flattened or spread to secure the rivet firmly. Care must be taken not to over-hammer, which can deform the rivet cap or damage the material.
